Job Summary
Our Santa Cruz, California office is seeking a staff Environmental Scientist II. This is a full-time, hourly position with a mixture of in-office work and fieldwork primarily located within the San Francisco Bay area. This position includes long field days and occasional overnight hotel stays. The selected candidate will work closely with project team members on water quality monitoring, stormwater monitoring, and sediment sampling projects. Responsibilities (may include, but not limited to):
Environmental monitoring, which includes but is not limited to storm and surface water sampling, sediment sampling, and in-situ flow measurements.
Assistance in the preparation of technical documents.
Calibration and operation of field equipment and water quality instruments.
Equipment maintenance, which may include cleaning, repairing, installing, or replacing field equipment.
Collection of field data and management of project data.
Effectively and regularly report the status of assignments to project team leads.
Data review and data validation.
Some project roles may include long field days, exposure to the elements (sun, rain, wind) for long periods of time, standing for long periods of time, or other possibly physically strenuous activities such as lifting objects.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
Minimum B.S./B.A. in the physical or life sciences (i.e., environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, etc.)
A minimum of two years of full-time professional work experience in a science field.
Resides within close proximity to our Santa Cruz office.
Strict adherence to company, project, state, and federal safety policies.
Availability to be on call for stormwater monitoring at night and on weekends from October 1 - April 30.
Technical writing experience.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to perform field work independently with minimal supervision and to accurately document sampling activities and standard scientific observations.
Ability to quickly adapt to different work environments and types of projects.
Maintain and promote high professional standards of service.
Maintain effective communication with clients and coworkers.
Ability to follow prescriptive sampling requirements.
Strong attention to detail.
Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and a safe driving record during the course of employment, as well as the minimum vehicle insurance required by law if using a personal vehicle on the job.
Occasional lifting of 50 pounds or less.
Frequent sitting, walking, and standing; occasional walking on uneven terrain.
Occasional bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
Frequent exposure to inclement weather, roadside traffic, sample preservation chemicals, and environmental samples.
